I am a complete newb when it comes to scarf due to me growing up in a tropical region. However that is not an excuse to not be fashionable with this amazing piece of wear. More importantly scarf is unisex so there is less mental stress from wearing one. Despite all these it is still best to wear scarf in colder area because it is already hot enough here. Nice extra perk for a mountain enthusiast like me.
In all honesty, I am feeling a little guilty for abandoning my first scarf that is a made of soft 100% black wool. It shed a lot and so caused itchiness to my already sensitive nose. I didn't know about this when buying from the thrift store that wool tends to shed, and I meant a lot. Despite my numerous effort to wash it, dry it and repeat. I had given up and kept it away for now. Lucky for me it was cheap. I read online about some methods to reduce shedding. According to Google Search Labs | AI Overview:
Freeze it: Fold the scarf, put it in a sealable bag, and freeze it overnight. The cold stiffens the fibers, making them less likely to shed.
Wash gently: Hand wash the scarf in cold water with a mild detergent. Avoid wringing or twisting, which can make shedding worse.
Dry flat: Lay the scarf flat to dry, out of direct sunlight and heat.
Use dryer sheets: After washing and drying, run a dryer sheet over the scarf to reduce static and prevent shedding.
Comb it.
Learning upon my inexperience, I got my 2nd scarf. Cotton. Perfect! It was a dark red wide scarf. Great to pair with my otherwise white T-shirt due to good contrast. Then, I started learning to wear it. At first, it wasn't much a success. All I knew was the simple draping around my neck. Fast forward a few weeks, I tried again. This time out of nowhere, I managed to get it to a basic City Slicker style. A small celebration for me. I am now looking forward to style it more often. Wish me luck please. I have compiled a few sources of scarf styling I found online. Well.. more like copy pasting. Please bear with me.

Follow the directions of the Four-in-Hand scarf knot. Then tuck the hanging ends of your scarf up around your neck.
Fold your scarf in half and place the middle of your halved scarf at the back of your neck, with a loop on one side and the ends on the other. Then split the ends of the scarf and put one side through the loop.
So simple! Just tie three knots in your scarf, then put it on your neck like a necklace. Tie the scarf behind your neck and fluff the knots to taste.
Place your scarf on the back of your neck with only about a foot of your scarf hanging off to one side. Start twisting your scarf and wrapping it around your neck. When you can’t twist anymore, tie the ends of your scarf together to secure it.
Lay the middle of your scarf on one shoulder. Bring one end of your scarf around the back of your neck and one end to the front.
Similar to #4, let a little bit of scarf hang off to one shoulder. Start twisting your scarf and wrapping it around your neck twice. Then tuck the scarf under the twisted section to secure, and let the longer scarf strands hang down.
You’ll need two scarves for this knot. With both of your scarves lined up together, place the middles on the back of your neck. With three of the ends, tie a knot towards the base. Slip the additional end into the loop between your neck and the knot.
Take the middle of your scarf and drape it in front of you. Then wrap the ends of the scarf around your neck and back to the front. Start tightly wrapping the ends of the scarf around the front loop to make the twisted effect.
Take the middle of your scarf and put it on the back of your neck. Tie a knot in front. Slide the knot over to your shoulder for a sophisticated look.
More sophisticated directions are available for the Challah Scarf Knot over here! :)
